Lorenzo swapped Ducati for Honda in the off season and will team up with the man he has battled for half a decade.
The duo have dominated MotoGP since Lorenzo’s second title in 2012 with Casey Stoner the last man outside the Spaniards to top the final standings in 2011.
Marquez has gone on to win the last three successive championships since Lorenzo beat Valentino Rossi to the title in 2015.
Marquez was the most recent first time world champion when he beat Lorenzo to the title in 2013.
The two will now join forces at Honda and team harmony will be high on everyone’s watchlist with the Japanese manufacturer.
So with that in mind could another rider take advantage of a potential civil war at Honda?
BT Sport’s MotoGP twitter posed fans the question: "Who will be the next rider to win their first MotoGP world championship?"
“If Marc doesnt win it’s obviously going to be Dovi or Vinales,” said one fan.
“It could be Maverick who is young and has the potential to actually win the title. Dovi who is so fast and consistent now with the Ducati,” replied another.
“Think it might click for Maverick this year if that Yamaha is fixed,” was also mentioned.
Maverick Vinales took Lorenzo’s seat at Yamaha in 2017 and has won four races but been hampered by inconsistencies.
Whilst Andrea Dovizioso has been Marquez’s closest challenger across the past two season’s with the Italian picking up ten race wins.
British interest was also rife with Honda rider Cal Crutchlow being touted as a potential world champion.
Now entering his ninth season in MotoGP he has often been on the fringes but been plagued by his erratic approach.
“Who will? Not sure. Who do I want to win? A certain Cal Crutchlow,” said one fan.
“I like how loads have picked Cal.. I'm a brit I would love him to win but to inconsistent,” added another.
Suzuki rider Alex Rins was another name mentioned as was Lorenzo’s replacement at Ducati, Danilo Petrucci, who set the fastest lap in testing this week.
