Former MotoGP world champion Jorge Lorenzo believes the odds for winning this year's championship are not in his favor. The three-time MotoGP champion admittingly considered two other riders with better odds to dethrone Marc Marquez other than himself. Marquez enters the 2019 season looking for his fourth straight MotoGP championship, and sixth overall.

Speaking with the Daily Star, Lorenzo claims that Italian riders Valentino Rossi and Andrea Dovizioso should enter the season with a better chance than himself to uncrown the MotoGP king that is Marc Marquez.
Part of the reason Lorenzo feels he shouldn't be favored is due to his new team, switching over to Honda after riding with Ducati the past two seasons.
Lorenzo Learning His New Team
When the season begins in Lusail, Qatar on Mar. 10, Lorenzo expects to have some issues with his new bike. Lorenzo even revealed that his goal for the first two or three races (Argentina and The Americas) will be to improve his new team's bike so that his odds of contending for a world championship will be greater as the season prolongs.
The last time Lorenzo switched teams was in 2017, moving to Ducati after spending a majority of his career with Japanese manufacturer Yamaha. Lorenzo's first season with Ducati did not go as planned, finishing seventh overall and even placing behind then-rookie Johann Zarco.
It was during the 2018 mid-season when Lorenzo finally started to become more accoladed with his new team, winning three races along with a second place finish.
It wasn't until Aragon when Lorenzo's 2018 took a turn for the worst, crashing mid-race while suffering an injury. The injury saw Lorenzo miss five of the final six races to end the season, ultimately dropping him to a ninth-place finish for the MotoGP world championship.
Another big reason as to why Lorenzo favors the pair of Italian riders over himself is due to the injury he suffered last season. The Spaniard dislocated his toe and fractured his second metatarsal (the bone between the toe and the base of the foot) following his crash. Ironically, Lorenzo blamed his new teammate Marquez for the wreck.
However, a new season means a new page to turn over. Lorenzo admits he is very excited to work with Honda and that he has effectively communicated to his new team what he needs to maximize his potential.
He currently has the second-best odds to win the MotoGP championship this season, hovering at a 25% chance.
Lorenzo Over a Legend?
Lorenzo actually has greater odds than the legendary Valentino Rossi, who Lorenzo claims should be considered as a favorite before himself. Rossi is an icon to the sport, a seven-time MotoGP world champion which is more than any other rider since 2001.
However, Rossi's last world championship came in 2009 as it has been all Lorenzo and Marquez since then (as well as Casey Stoner who won in 2011).

Rossi's odds are much lower than Lorenzo's, as the Italian icon has a less than 10% chance to win the championship. Rossi did finish 2018 in third place though and was one of only four riders to accumulate over 100 points in the season (198).
Rossi's Italian counterpart, Andrea Dovizioso, enters 2019 with the third-best odds to win the world championship with about a 14% chance.
Dovizioso won a total of four races last season, which was the second-most behind favorite Marquez. He also won the final race of the season in 2018, giving him some slight momentum entering Qatar in March.
Not only did Dovizioso win the final race of 2018, but he also won in Qatar a season ago. Repeating his success in Lusail from last season would give the rising star a huge boost in challenging Marquez in 2019.
Marquez Not Moving Yet
Marquez seems locked as the favorite though, entering 2019 with about a 53% chance of claiming his fourth straight championship. Saying that Marquez has been impressive over the past five or six seasons would be an understatement.
The reigning champion has won five of the last six MotoGP world championships with only fellow countryman Jorge Lorenzo standing in his way during the 2015 season.
It's hard not to bet on Marquez as the 2019 MotoGP champion, as he won half of the races a year ago (nine out of 18 total). Marquez also reached the podium (top three finish) in 14 of the 18 total races, while also being the only rider to eclipse the 300 total point mark.

The rise of Marquez has been tough to ignore, as he is quickly becoming one of the most polarizing figures in the sport. At just 25 years of age, Marquez has the potential to become MotoGP's greatest rider of all-time. He is two MotoGP world championships away from tying Rossi, who many consider being the greatest right now.
