Valentino Rossi is the most successful rider of the modern era with nine world championships across all formats of the sport.
His five successive world titles from 2001-2005 catapulted him into the global spotlight and his popularity has grown ever since.
Rossi is aiming for a record-equalling tenth world title but 2019 marks a decade since he last topped the sport.
The likes of Marc Marquez and Jorge Lorenzo have gone on to monopolise the sport but Rossi’s character and charm has ensured his popularity has remained despite a decline in results.
The Doctor’s mother was interviewed by GPOne.com ahead of Rossi’s landmark birthday and she offered an insight as to what the rider is like away from the track.
She said: “He is what you see on television.
“He’s attentive, he puts his all into doing things in the best way possible.
“On some occasions, he’s sometimes instinctive, but he’s level-headed.
“I can say this because I’ve never seen him get angry once.”
Rossi is looking to right the wrongs of 2018 where he failed to pick up a single victory.
The 2017 Dutch Grand Prix was his last win in MotoGP on a Yamaha bike that struggled for much of last season.
It was the first season he had ever failed to deliver a win with the Japanese team since moving to them in 2003.
His team-mate Maverick Vinales won the team’s only race at round 17 in Australia.
The Spanish rider is looking to establish himself at the team’s number one rider with Rossi in the twilight of his career but the Italian refuses to rule out staying in MotoGP once his current contract expires.
Rossi must also contend with two riders who’ve graduated from his own academy this season - both Franco Morbidelli and Francesco Bagnaia will battle with their mentor when the season gets underway in Qatar.
