MotoGP: Jack Miller said he pushed too hard in early laps of San Marino GP and paid the price

JACK Miller said he simply pushed too hard in the early laps of the San Marino Grand Prix, where he crashed out on the third lap of the race.

The Australian appeared poised for a strong race after qualifying on the front row. Having demonstrated strong race pace in practice along with his qualifying speed, Miller was keen to stick with the leading group after the early skirmishes.

He held second behind polesitter Jorge Lorenzo in the opening corners before losing a spot to eventual winner Andrea Dovizioso down the back straight.

Miller then slipped to fourth a lap later after a firm move from Marc Marquez, one which he admitted “shook me a little bit”.

He would make exactly one more lap, crashing at the same corner where he’d been passed by the reigning world champion.

“I was missing a bit of acceleration so I was working really hard in the corners trying to stay with those guys,” he said.

“I really wanted to stay with them so I was pushing pretty hard. They gained a little bit on me down the back straight and I carried a little bit extra corner speed into there.

“Just with the full tank and the track was not quite ready, it still had a lot of Dunlop rubber on it (from Moto3 and Moto2), and it cost me.

“I held it on my elbow as long as I could but she went away very quick.

“I seemed to be struggling in that corner through qualifying yesterday, we tried to add a little bit of pre-load just to try and make it better, but maybe we went a little bit the wrong way.

“We live and we learn.”

Miller would remount the bike and continue although the crash dropped him to the back of the field. Despite the delay, Miller was able to illustrate his good race pace by working his way back up to 18th.

“I think we made a good step this weekend,” he said.

“Even when I picked the bike up after the crash with a bent handlebar and bent brake levers we were still really fast in the race and made up a lot of positions and a lot of time.

“If we look at the race pace it was really solid again. I think we’ve recovered what we needed in the past GPs.

“The test in Aragon last week was very positive for us. I look forward to getting there and trying to see what we can do.”

The next round of the MotoGP World Championship is at Motorland Aragon on September 21-23.
