DAZN signs two-year deal for non-exclusive MotoGP rights in Italy - SportBusiness

Subscription OTT platform DAZN has agreed a deal to broadcast the top three levels of MotoGP racing for the 2020 and 2021 seasons.

The rights are non-exclusive across all the MotoGP, 2 and 3 levels of racing and were agreed with Dorna, MotoGP’s rights-holder, and the IMG agency.

Sky Italia also holds the rights to MotoGP after agreeing a three-season contract extension running from 2019 to 2021.

The 2020 MotoGP, 2 and 3 seasons begin on March 8 and will run until November 15.

The deal expands DAZN’s geographic coverage of MotoGP with it also holding the rights in Spain until 2022.

The OTT platform also holds rights in Italy to Serie A football, Spanish LaLiga, and the American National Football League.

Sky Italia’s interest in renewing its rights for MotoGP racing from 2021 onwards have been questioned in Italian media due to dwindling viewing figures.

MotoGP legend Valentino Rossi’s contract is also due to expire at the end of 2020 which could make this his final season. Rossi’s retirement could impact heavily as the Italian rider has driven interest and viewing figures in the Italian market throughout his 20-year career.
