MotoGP news, German Grand Prix 2019: Marc Marquez puts unbeaten record on the line as the challengers continue to emerge - Fox Sports

Up next, MotoGP heads to the Sachsenring in Germany, also known as Marc Marquez territory.

The Spaniard is unbeaten here across all three classes since he won from pole position in 2010 on a 125cc Derbi and given that record he will be the overwhelming favourite to do the same again this weekend.

But remember, we’ve already been to another arm of the Marquez Empire this season, at the Circuit of the Americas, and we all remember how that ended.

I’d thought Marquez had lost his ‘win it or bin it’ philosophy after crashing out of Mugello when in P2 last year and hunting down leader Jorge Lorenzo. He finished in 16th that race but seemed to learn from the mistake the following week when he admitted he was racing for second place and the 20 points that came with it.

This new attitude from Marquez saw him go on to win a fifth world championship with ease.

CotA was a flashback to that Mugello race, just replace Lorenzo with Alex Rins, who secured his first MotoGP win on the Suzuki.

Marquez recently said “more victories is more pressure” and eight wins into the 2019 season, with five different winners of four different machines, I would be inclined to agree with him.

MotoGP is in a very healthy state at the moment, with the sort of balance and competitiveness that Formula One can only envy – even if Marquez’s 44-point lead over Andrea Dovizioso suggests otherwise.

Dovizioso has a massive task in front of him to close that gap and it won’t be easy for him in Germany given his record. He has only managed one podium here since 2012 – a P3 finish in 2016 – but this is MotoGP and as we saw at CotA, anything can happen at any time!

But perhaps Marquez’s biggest adversaries will come in the form of Yamaha after Maverick Vinales, Fabio Quartararo and Franco Morbidelli took first, third and fifth respectively in a huge surprise at Assen last time out. In what was even more surprisingly was that Valentino Rossi, after qualifying poorly again in P14, crashed out again, taking out Takaaki Nakagami in the process.

It was Rossi’s third consecutive race without taking any points, which has only happened once before in his career! Last year he was second to Marquez but he’ll need to up his qualifying and keep on two wheels if he is to do that again this time.

As for Aussie hero Jack Miller, he had by far his worst result of the season in terms of races he has finished having been inside the top five all year up until that point. But he’s got experience here too, all the way back in Moto3 when he won in 2014. So he knows the circuit well and if he keeps his focus he could be in for another decent points haul.

Also in action this weekend will be Jack’s fellow Aussie Remy Gardner in Moto2. Remy put in a fantastic lap in qualifying to take pole but had a bumpy ride thereafter. Hopefully he can go one better at the Sachsenring this weekend.
