But fans of the legendary rider were unhappy with the lack of improvement in his Yamaha YZR-M1 bike after last year.
Much to the disappointment of his army of supporters, Rossi failed to record a win in any of last season's 19 Grands Prix.
Rossi is still the only rider in history to win World Championships in 125cc, 250cc, 500cc and MotoGP.
But Yamaha seem unable to provide 'The Doctor' with a machine capable of challenging the dominant manufacturers of Honda and Ducati.
Despite his improvement from 14th place where he began, to fifth where he finished, his fans were still left wanting more.
One Valentino Rossi fan tweeted: "Switch manufacturer. Yamaha haven't had a clue for the past 2-3 years."
Another added: "The Yamaha looks like the 3rd best bike maybe even 4th best bike again WTF do Yamaha do in the close season??
"Not a f******g lot by the looks of it, give the GOAT a competitive bike FFS!!"
A third furious fan wrote: "If Vale was at Honda he'd have been 20 times world champion #greatest."
"@ValeYellow46 you rode a good race! Yamaha need to sort out the bike! Make it a winner, Vale will do the rest," tweeted another Rossi supporter.
"@YamahaMotoGP Should work a bit harder to give him more competitive bike," complained another MotoGP spectator.
One confused fan simply asked: "Why has the Yamaha got such low top end speed?"
And Rossi himself appeared to question his own team in the aftermath of the Qatar Grand Prix.
"The problem is that we are more or less like last year, he said. “We will take this result.
"The podium, I tried for it, but I was not strong enough. The problems are more or less the same.
"In some areas, we improved but unfortunately we are always struggling with the rear grip and it is difficult.”
