Jorge Lorenzo: MotoGP star admits retirement thoughts made him DEPRESSED | MotoGP news results drivers race and qualifying MotoGP latest - Daily Star

Lorenzo went winless in his debut season with Ducati in 2017 and put in a succession of poor performances in the opening rounds last year.

The Spaniard finished sixth in round five at Le Mans and came in for mass criticism with some quarters questioning his motivation.

However, the three-time MotoGP world champion bounced back at the following round in Italy and recorded his first win for over 18 months.

He backed that up with victories in Barcelona and Spielberg before injury cut short his charge up the standings.

“But really I didn’t expect when I started feeling the possibility of retirement I was getting depressed.”

But prior to that renaissance the Desmosedici had all but given up on the Spanish rider leaving him with two choices - an uncompetitive satellite Yamaha bike or retirement.

Fortunately for Lorenzo an unlikely call from Honda saved his career and he concedes the concept of retirement didn’t appeal to him like he thought it would.

In an interview with BT Sport he said: “I was almost in a little depression.

“When I was seeing the possibility to retire in my head I was getting depressed - normally when I finished my retirement I was feeling happy.

“Because I would not feel anymore pressure and I wouldn’t get injured anymore.

“Because I was very close to retirement.”

Instead Lorenzo will go up against five-time and current world champion Marc Marquez when the season gets underway in Qatar in less than three weeks.

Lorenzo is the only man to stop Marquez winning world championship since he came into the sport in 2013.

The 31-year-old winning in 2015 to add to his other triumphs in 2010 and 2012.

Lorenzo is currently fighting to be 100% for the season’s curtain raiser following a foot injury that has hampered his preparations with his new team.
