MotoGP news: Valentino Rossi and Maverick Vinales partnership scrutinised - EXCLUSIVE

That’s according to BT Sport pundit James Toseland who has urged the 23-year-old to find some consistency.

Vinales finished ahead of Rossi is Thailand.

The veteran ace was fourth and Vinales finished on the podium in third.

For the majority of the season, the former Suzuki star has lagged behind Rossi though.

He’s cut a frustrated figure on an M1 bike that’s been plagued by technical issues.

Toseland says he understands Vinales’ frustration but insists he must focus on becoming top dog at the Japanese heavyweights.

“He’s second fiddle to Rossi and that wasn’t supposed to be the case,” Toseland told Express Sport.

“It’s okay him being frustrated, but he’s got to at least turn the tables before his voice will be heard.

“It’s more difficult for a young lad to hide your frustration than an experienced guy.

“There’s even more frustration for Vinales because he left Suzuki for Yamaha to try and win the Championship.

“He made the difficult decision because that’s what he wanted to do.

“I know Suzuki have had a difficult time as well since he left, but he came to Yamaha to win.”

Despite the obvious improvement in Thailand for Yamaha, Rossi claimed the result only papers over the cracks.

“This is unfortunately a risk [that Yamaha thinks it has solved its problems], but it is a losing mentality,” he said.

“So many times our engineers are happy if Maverick can make a good time in testing, they say, ‘we got it!’

“If I were a Yamaha engineer, I would analyse the results of the second part of the season and I would not be happy about one fast lap or a front row.”

Rossi claims the grip on the Buriram track surface might have helped improve the M1’s performance.

He added: “On paper this track is not a Yamaha track.

“I expected to suffer a lot more and to be for example stronger in Misano, but in Misano we struggled.

“For me, more than the layout of the track, is different the grip of the asphalt that helped us, more or less.

“If you want to be competitive you have to be strong everywhere because now Ducati and Honda are strong everywhere.

“For me, we miss something but maybe this weekend we improved, we will see in Motegi.”
