MotoGP 2019, MotoGP fall stats, MotoGP 2020, Marc Marquez, Johann Zarco - Fox Sports

Grand Prix motorcycle racing is all about riders pushing the limits, and Johann Zarco has been revealed to have recorded the most falls in 2019.

The Frenchman has taken the mantle from premier class world champion Marc Marquez after he fell 17 times in 2019, two more than Australian Pramac Racing rider Jack Miller.

According to MotoGP.com, a ‘fall’ is defined as the bike ‘physically touching the ground and remaining on the ground’. As such, the definition doesn’t take in the likes of ridiculous saves executed by Marquez at Phillip Island.

Marquez had been the crash king in 2017 (27 falls) and 2018 (23) in MotoGP, and topped the list in the premier class in both seasons.

The Repsol Honda ace brought the figure down to 14 in 2019, equal with Pramac rookie Francesco Bagnaia, behind Zarco and Miller.

Marquez’s falls weren’t small, though, with his staggering Thailand and Malaysia crashes making headlines.

It was a turbulent year for Zarco, who crashed 13 times in 13 races aboard his factory KTM before requesting an early release from his two-year contract.

The two-time Moto2 champion then moved to LCR Honda to sub for the injured Takaaki Nakagami, and registered four crashes in his four races – including a horror incident at the Valencia season finale when he was wiped out by Iker Lecuona’s bike.

Zarco has since signed with Ducati-Avintia, despite earlier declaring he had no desire to race for the team.

MotoGP.com also accrued the numbers across all three classes, with Zarco joint sixth in terms of most falls.

Moto3 rider Tom Booth-Amos topped the combined list with 22 accidents in 2019, ahead of Can Oncu (21, Moto3), Sam Lowes (20, Moto2), Kaito Toba (Moto3) and Kazuki Masaki (18, Moto3).

The total number of MotoGP accidents (220) was the lowest since 2015. The Moto3 class featured 404 falls, up from 356 in 2018 and the class’s highest total since 2016. Moto2 saw 347 falls, down from 418 in 2018.

There were 971 falls across all classes in 2019, marking the fewest falls since 2013 (863) and well down on the 2017 peak (1126).

Le Mans, the home of the French Grand Prix, saw the most falls with 90, ahead of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya (73) and Australia’s own Phillip Island.

The Australian Grand Prix weekend featured a number of big accidents, notably for local Moto2 hope Remy Gardner and MotoGP rookie Fabio Quartararo. The premier class race was also punctuated by a final-lap disaster for the weekend pacesetter Maverick Vinales.

Barcelona, meanwhile, played host to the devastating tangle triggered by Jorge Lorenzo, which wiped out the bulk of the lead pack sans Marquez.

Turn 3 at Le Mans was the biggest hotspot of 2019 with 32 falls, ahead of the ‘Honda’ corner – Turn 4 – at Phillip Island with 27.

Both the French and Australian Grands Prix were affected by wet weather, the latter smashed by dangerous winds all weekend.

Meanwhile, Aragon’s 15 falls marked the smallest haul of the season, behind the Red Bull Ring (34) and the newly-resurfaced Silverstone (36).
