Marc Marquez in line break MotoGP season points record - Fox Sports

Marc Marquez is staring down the barrel of becoming the first rider in premier class history to reach 400 points in a season.

The world champion has tallied 375 points after 17 races in 2019, and is just eight points behind current Repsol Honda teammate 2010 record, when he won the title for Yamaha with 383 points.

Lorenzo set the record nine years ago in an 18-race season. Ahead of this weekend’s penultimate race in Malaysia, Marquez can not only surpass Lorenzo’s benchmark, but also take another step towards uncharted territory.

With 25 points available for wins, and 20 for second, Marquez – who has finished in the top two in every race he has finished since the 2018 Austrian Grand Prix – is likely to reach the 400-point mark.

Marquez’s Australian Grand Prix victory at Phillip Island was only sealed on the final lap last weekend, but the Spaniard’s race smarts have proven his strength in a near faultless title defence.

Heading to Sepang, the 26-year-old has 11 wins, 10 poles and 16 podiums to his name, and currently holds an unassailable 135-point lead over Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso.

Marquez could also possibly break Valentino Rossi’s 2005 record for the largest points gap between first and second in the championship.

14 years ago, Rossi claimed a fifth consecutive title by a whopping 147 points over Marco Melandri. Should Marquez put 13 or more points over Dovizioso across the Sepang and Valencia races, he’ll claim that record too.

Marquez also broke Mick Doohan’s record as the most winningest Honda rider in the premier class at Phillip Island, just a week after tying the Australian legend in Motegi.

He has already claimed his 2019 title as the best of his eight – and six in MotoGP – and it now the third most winningest rider in premier class history. Just Rossi (89) and Giacomo Agostini (68) have more.

He also is top of the tree when it comes to premier class poles (62).

However, Marquez is refusing to think about records, and it just living in the moment.

He also looking to help Honda seal the Triple Crown as the team chases Ducati in Malaysia, where he has won three times across all classes.

Repsol Honda currently trails Ducati by just one point in the teams’ standings, having already sealed the riders’ and constructors’ crowns.

“We need to enjoy these sweet moments as we cannot say what the future is. Maybe next season we will struggle more,” he said.

“We enjoyed a great victory in Australia as me, the Repsol Honda Team and the bike are working very well together.

“Now we arrive at the last race of the triple, but it’s not time to stop and relax.

“Sepang is another track where I think Yamaha will be fast, as will Ducati, but the target is of course to try and fight for victory again.

“We will see how the weekend goes and adapt as we need to.”
