The sun shines on the green hills of the Red Bull Ring, where the MotoGP officially kicked off the first free practice session. An important session for many riders who are looking for the best set-up in the first part of the round and the fastest lap in the second.
Watching everyone from above after the first round was Andrea Dovizioso who, with a pair of soft tires, managed to stop the clock on the time at 1'24"033. A session in crescendo for the rider from Forlì, who started slowly and improved, becoming the reference for the group.
Second place for Marc Marquez who, as always, preferred to work on the duration of a pair of medium tires, stopping at 185 thousandths from the best time. Closing the hypothetical front row was Maverick Vinales (+0.247), who took to the track at the end with a pair of new medium tires, like his teammate, Valentino Rossi, fifth at less than half a second behind Dovizioso.
Between the two, Yamaha places one of the most talked about riders of the moment, Jack Miller, the only one to score his best time with a hard tire for the rear, which could also be an important reference for the race. Sixth place for Fabio Quartararo, equipped with a carbon fork for the first time in a race weekend.
Behind the French rider, the only Suzuki on the track, namely Alex Rins, almost six tenths behind the leader with a pair of medium-soft tires, while Johann Zarco is the first KTM rider in eighth place, ahead of Nakagami and Oliveira.
Out of the top ten at the moment, Crutchlow (11th) and Danilo Petrucci, the first took in a second in 14th, behind Pecco Bagnaia, while Franco Morbidelli is only 17th, ahead of Andrea Iannone. Finally, Syahrin's bad fall on the final round is worth a mention. The Malaysian rider lost control of his KTM at Turn nine, first crashing against the bike and then against the asphalt, remaining in pain on the ground for a few moments.
