Jorge Lorenzo opens up on MotoGP ‘doubts’ following rumours of Ducati return - Fox Sports

Jorge Lorenzo has opened up on the “doubts” he had with his Honda and MotoGP future following two heavy accidents.

The three-time premier class champion returns to MotoGP action this weekend at Silverstone after missing the last four races through injury.

Lorenzo fractured a vertebra in practice in Assen barely a fortnight after crashing heavily in testing in Barcelona.

Return to Silverstone: A step into the unknown ahead of crucial weekend

The Spaniard’s maiden season with Honda was later hit with speculation he was exploring a return to Ducati in 2020.

The speculation affected Jack Miller most, who was in negotiations with Ducati to remain with Pramac Racing.

Miller has since re-signed, and Lorenzo earlier committed to his two-year Honda deal.

However, facing media for the first time since the reports emerged, Lorenzo conceded the impact the two accidents had, while Miller also revealed how close he was to taking up an offer from KTM.

“I just can tell that obviously, as a human being, after two very hard and big crashes, especially the last one in Assen, but also you couldn’t see my crash in Montmelo … when you speak about back injuries, it gets serious. Honestly, I started to have doubts,” Lorenzo said at Silverstone.

“Doubts about my life, about my career. I think it’s human, it’s normal to have these kind of doubts.

“When I started to feel better and more recovered, these doubts started to disappear, and the commitment, and the challenge that more or less one year ago I decided to take [in joining Honda], I restarted to be again convinced about that.

“The challenge to be able to be competitive with also the Honda MotoGP bike, to be able to win with them some race at least, and to be able to win with three bikes [Honda, Yamaha and Ducati] and again after recovering and feeling better, knowing that this injury will not create problems for the future in my health, I again felt commitment to keep with this challenge.

“I called Alberto [Puig, Honda team boss] and Honda and told them I wanted to be fully committed to the challenge.”

Lorenzo has struggled to make the Honda package work to his liking, something teammate and world champion Marc Marquez hasn’t needed to worry about this season.

The 32-year-old is yet to finish a race in 2019 in the top 10, and has qualified just once — eighth in France — inside the top 10.

Marquez, meanwhile, enjoys a 58-point lead in the riders’ standings with six wins from 11 starts.

Lorenzo said he wanted to call Puig because the “rumours were huge”. However, he was firm in his commitment to Honda.

“I’m here to speak about the future. I told already how my feelings were when I had the crash, and how my feelings were more safe and more secure during the healing process, during these weeks,” he said.

“I have a two-year contract. We have gone through difficulties until now, but I signed a two-year contract and I would like to get results with this bike, as I did with the rest of the bikes I’ve been [on] through 17 years [in racing].”
