The Doctor has been competing at the highest level for two decades.

He remains competitive in the MotoGP ranks with a comparatively unreliable Yamaha M1 bike.

However, there have been telltale signs that his powers might be waning.

Rossi crashed out of Mugello last time out after desperately trying to force his way back up the ranks.

The experienced superstar is also without a Grand Prix win since Assen in June 2017.

Agostini, 76, has warned that Rossi can’t keep putting off the inevitable.

"We must understand that the years go by for everyone,” he told Spanish daily AS.

“For example, in football, it would have been impossible to see Maradona behaving at 40 as he did at half that age.

“The same applies to athletes like Cassius Clay or many others.

“Even if you are young at 40, you are dealing with children with a decidedly different mentality."

Rossi suggested earlier this month that he still has plenty to give.

"In Austin, two months ago, I was very happy,” he told Marca.

“So it's much harder, but you must not give up and and try to give the maximum.

“The fans do not need to worry.”

BT Sport pundit Michael Laverty told Starsport earlier this season that Rossi’s VR46 academy keeps him youthful.

“Valentino can still outperform [Maverick] Vinales over a season, especially if he uses all that experience. He’s still fit and healthy.

“He’s got the ranch with the kids at the VR46 academy - he’s still got a passion for it.

“I think with the advances in medical science, it’s prolonging life and and prolonging careers. Look at Tom Brady for example in the NFL.

“Valentino has still got plenty of life in him. As long as he’s still got the passion he’ll turn it on when he needs to.”
