The motorsport legend has had a challenging few weeks in the championship race.
He struggled at Mugello and suffered a shock crash following an ill-fated duel with Joan Mir.
Rossi finished sixth in Jerez and fifth at Le Mans prior to the disappointing showing in his homeland.
Nevertheless, he showed no signs of taking things easy in his latest Instagram post and appeared to be helping out Ducati ace Dovizioso with training.
“MotoGP hero Valentino Rossi is honing his motocross skills”
The Doctor can be seen pushing himself in northern Italy, but it’s Dovizioso’s presence that raises eyebrows.
The experienced ace is the biggest challenger to Rossi’s nemesis Marc Marquez in the championship race.
Rossi added the caption: “Great return to Cavallara! Finally, one of my favorite tracks, it seems to be in California.”
The Doctor is usually putting his academy riders through their paces in his hometown.
However, Rossi obviously fancied a change of scenery ahead of this weekend’s action.
The 40-year-old performed well in Barcelona last year and bagged a podium finish.
But unless Yamaha sort out niggling issues on his M1, another strong showing looks unlikely.

Rossi claimed last week that his bike still isn’t firing on all cylinders.
"I suffer from the start in third or fourth gears,” he said.
“It's not only top speed, but also acceleration.
“When you're slow everything is difficult, you have to try things, we're worried because we want to try more.”
Jorge Lorenzo - who once shared a garage with Rossi - bagged the maximum points in Barcelona 12 months ago.
The Spaniard isn’t expected to be a serious contender this time round though.
Lorenzo has suffered a dire campaign so far and hasn’t come close to challenging for top-three finish.
