The 40-year-old superstar secured a surprise second-place finish at the Circuit of the Americas in April.
He was unable to beat race winner Alex Rins, but there was a buzz in the paddock that Rossi could be a championship contender.
However, since his Texas showdown with Rins, Rossi has has failed to hit top gear. He finished sixth in Jerez - and fifth at Le Mans - but crashed out of Mugello on Sunday.

His difficulties in recent weeks has led to speculation that he could hang up his leathers.
The Doctor has previously suggested he’d only retire when he stopped enjoying racing.
Rossi insists now is not the time and there’s plenty of life in the old dog.
"In Austin, two months ago, I was very happy,” he told Marca.
“So it's much harder, but you must not give up and and try to give the maximum.
“The fans do not need to worry.”

Rossi became embroiled in an ill-fated tussle with Joan Mir at Mugello.
The set-to resulted in both riders coming off track.
He added: "It was one of my worst weekends in a long time, I was never quick, everything was more difficult after the error in the third free practice.
“In the race, when you went are far back… I had a contact with Mir, then I fell.”
Rossi says his M1, which was blighted by technical malfunctions last season, still isn’t up to scratch.
"I suffer from the start in third or fourth gears.
“It's not only top speed, but also acceleration.
“When you're slow everything is difficult, you have to try things, we're worried because we want to try more.”
