Valentino Rossi handed huge MotoGP Jerez boost: Have you seen Yamaha's M1 tweak? - Daily Star - Daily Star

Ducati originally showcased a similar addition in the Qatar curtain raiser.

It caused massive controversy in March with rival factories suggesting it gave an unfair advantage.

However, the sport’s governing body threw out the complaint and other MotoGP heavyweights are now following suit with aerodynamic tweaks.

The spoiler-like device is now fitted to the respective bikes of Valentino Rossi and Maverick Vinales.

Michael Laverty - who raced at MotoGP level in 2013 and 2014 - told Starsport last month how Ducati deliberately pushed their luck with guidelines relating to aerodynamic additions.

“I think they’ve been very clever in terms of how they’ve interpreted the rules,” he said.

“They found a loophole. And, as they tend to do, they exploit the little gaps in the rules that allow them to innovate something new.

“They themselves have admitted they took the idea from Yamaha when they appeared in Valencia last year with a rain spoiler.

“Ducati went a step and found there was a separate set of guidelines that allowed attachments to the swingarm - but it had to be for one of three reasons.

“To clear the water, protect from debris or cool the tyres. So, they went with the tyre coolant rule so it was legal.

“But the secondary objective is to generate some downforce directly under the rear tyre.

“They’ve managed to achieve both of those with the primary affect being to cool the tyre.”
