French MotoGP news 2019: The clouds could align for Jack Miller as rain is set to cause chaos in France - Fox Sports

The European races are coming at us thick and fast and now it’s the turn of France and Le Mans to host the MotoGP party.

First up, the weather looks like it is going to play a major role this Sunday. Light rain is forecast to roll in Friday afternoon during Free Practice 2, with a foggy start to Saturday followed by afternoon showers. And it’s the same for race day.

As we have witnessed over the years, untoward weather conditions are a recipe for success. Take MotoGP and just add some water and produces some racing and results that you would never have believed possible.

Jerez had been resurfaced, but Michelin had done no testing on the new surface. Le Mans on the other hand was resurfaced a couple of years ago, therefore Michelin have up to date data on the surface conditions. So teams have their data, but the rain could well wash that all away.

Given the nature of Le Mans’ lap and the weather forecast, I feel we may see some big upsets. Local favourite Johann Zarco finished second to Maverick Vinales in 2017 on the Yamaha, and last year he started from pole position after setting the fastest ever two wheeled lap at his home GP. Now he is on the Factory KTM and just last week hired Frenchman,(ex World Supercross Champion and Factory 500cc rider) Jean Michel Bayle as his coach, after recently lacking results.

Another Frenchman, rookie Fabio Quartararo, became the youngest ever premier class polesitter two weeks ago at Jerez and his race pace, running second to race leader Marc Marquez, was on point until his dream was cruelly ended by a broken gear linkage, resulting in a DNF.

Both Frenchmen will be looking for revenge on home soil, and that forecast rain may well provide the basis for just one or two of many possible upsets in France this Sunday.

Jack Miller and Aleix Espargaro had words on the plane leaving Jerez after they came together in the Spanish GP, typically each rider blaming the other. We will see how they go when in come into close combat in this weekend as they are another two riders that could take advantage in inclement conditions.

Miller has a third and fourth so far, but his second DNF in the first four GP’s is holding him down in seventh in the standings, he will be looking to bounce back in France and get into the top five once again.

Danilo Petrucci on the Factory Ducati is yet to win a race, with his best being second to Valentino Rossi at a wet Assen in 2017. Cal Crutchlow is another who could surprise while Jorge Lorenzo is still yet to really come to terms with the Repsol Honda.

Andrea Dovizioso led the championship out of Qatar, Marquez from Argentina, Dovizioso took it back in America and Marquez leads going into France after winning in Jerez – it really has been a championship tug-of-war between them so far.

There have also been three different winners, Dovizioso, Marquez and Alex Rins on three different marques: Ducati, Honda and Suzuki.

Will it be a fourth on Sunday in France? With just nine points separating the top four in the championship, the weather closing in and a hand full of riders with a point to prove, there is every chance there will be.
