The 33-year-old posted a picture of himself with Ferrari ahead of the season curtain raiser.
Stoner, who hails from New South Wales, soaked up the sights on the grid in Melbourne.
He posted on Twitter: “Always a pleasure to visit the @F1 and nice to be on home turf for it #AusGP @ScuderiaFerrari”
But despite the two-time MotoGP champion's enthusiasm, Ferrari had a race to forget in the end. Sebastian Vettel missed out on a podium place after finishing fourth.
Andrea Dovizioso only beat Marquez by 0.023 seconds in the Qatar showpiece seven days ago.
Motorsport fans were quick to point out that MotoGP is often far more competitive than F1.
One Twitter user posted: “Saw a clip of the #AusGP heard a message telling a driver to not overtake or race. Remembered why I watch @MotoGP instead. F1 is f*****. Utterly f*****.
Another added: “Well, #MotoGP & #FormulaE have provided great racing this year… #F1 has tinkered with the rules again and produced yet another dull #AustralianGP”
An frustrated fan labelled F1 ‘sleep therapy’: “In MotoGP the top 5 were covered by 0.6sec, in F1 today the top 5 were covered by 1 minute. One is entertainment, one is sleep therapy @F1 @MotoGP”
Speaking after the race, Max Verstappen - who finished third - explained that his tyres caused issues.
"On the first tyres, as soon as you got within 1.5 seconds the tyres overheated and I couldn't place an attack,” he told Sky Sports.
"As soon as I got on to the mediums, the car felt good and as soon as I had the opportunity I went for it, but Lewis had more pace than Seb and at this track it is so hard to overtake.
"I was just trying to push up to Lewis and go for the fastest lap but it did not work out, but I'm happy to be third, happy for the team and Honda.
“Since we started working together I'm really happy with them."
