MotoGP heavyweight wades into Ducati winglet row with controversial F1 suggestion | MotoGP news results drivers race and qualifying MotoGP latest - Daily Star

That’s according to former Honda ace Max Biaggi who says more clarity is needed regarding additions to bikes.

Andrea Dovizioso stormed to glory in the Qatar curtain raiser.

However, his triumph was marred by furious protests from rival teams about a winter bodywork tweak to the Desmosedici bike.

Honda, Suzuki, KTM and Aprilia all lodged a complaint with the FIM MotoGP Stewards Panel against the addition of a rear winglet.

“MotoGP ace Andrea Dovizioso was slammed for the winglet on his Ducati”

Biaggi, however, has warned that teams will always push rules to the limit when the guidelines are vague.

“The problem is that aerodynamic developments always create regulatory conflicts, because the line between what is lawful and what is not legal is very subtle,” he wrote on Facebook.

“In Formula 1, we see how the ‘aerodynamicists’ of the different teams are always looking for regulatory issues, in order to develop new ideas, through which they generate an advantage for their team.

“The world of MotoGP has evolved a lot in recent years in terms of aerodynamics!

“Just think of the problems that [Andrea] Iannone and [Francesco] Bagnaia have encountered. In fact, during the first frantic turns, the contact between several riders made them lose part of their winglets.

“When they returned to their booths, they both reported a motorcycle with obvious dynamic problems.

“All this was unthinkable until recently! This episode represents another answer to thousands of doubts, which animated the discussions between enthusiasts on the usefulness of aerodynamic appendages.

"The aerodynamic packages developed by the manufacturers work and change the dynamics of the bike steadily, like what happens on cars.”

Biaggi’s social media update comes amid news of:

- Lewis Hamilton’s touching message from a MotoGP star

- Cal Crutchlow being labelled 'heroic' for doing this

- A fascinating Rossi and Tom Brady comparison

Biaggi - who now runs Moto3 outfit Sterilgarda Max Racing Team - says MotoGP must look to F1 for inspiration.

However, the 47-year-old has warned that winglets could become a necessity as bikes get even faster.

He added: “The best way to limit the escalation of costs associated with aerodynamic studies is to quickly adapt the regulations to decide, immediately and with extreme clarity, what is lawful and what is not!

"Formula 1 can teach us a lot of things in this area, so they should take it as an example.

“What do you think of all this? Would you obstruct all aerodynamic appendages or are you in favour of a regulated development of aerodynamics on motorcycles?

“Personally, I think that with the great power of the current machines, we can not do without winglets, so that the front wheel can more easily stay in contact with the asphalt.

“Winglets are an advantage in terms of safety and performance.

“I also think there needs to be clear regulation to prevent regulatory debates and increased costs.”
