MotoGP riders outshone as Beach wins Superprestigio crown

The fifth running of the Superprestigio Dirt Track event was won by American JD Beach on Saturday evening, as MotoGP stars Johann Zarco and Xavier Simeon both failed to make the final.

Last year's champion Marc Marquez was notably absent from the Barcelona event, along with arch-rival Brad Baker, resulting in a depleted crowd attendance at the Palau San Jordi.

Marquez's non-attendance made Tech 3 Yamaha MotoGP rider Zarco the biggest name on the entry, alongside 2018 premier class rookie Simeon and MotoAmerica champion Toni Elias.

It was former Moto2 champion Elias that emerged as the best of the 'Superprestigio' class riders in qualifying, while Zarco and Simeon both battled their way through the heats to make it into the last eight.

However, both MotoGP riders crashed out in the third leg of the final, with Elias making it through to the 'Superfinal' along with Moto2 rider Remy Gardner and Moto3 racers Albert Arenas and Fabio di Giannantonio.

In the 'Superfinal', the quartet would face the best four riders from the 'Open' category of flat-trackers, with pace-setter Beach being joined by Briar Bauman, Ferran Cardus and Guillermo Cano.

Beach made his way past Elias and Cardus in the early stages of the 16-lap final, pulling away to win by just under a second, as fellow American Bauman forced his way past Cardus on the last lap to grab the runner-up spot.

Elias was best of the road racers in fourth, ahead of di Giannantonio and Arenas, while Gardner finished eighth behind Cano.
