Rossi hit the track in Valencia yesterday as his team began tuning up for the new season.
His Yamaha team didn't have the best 2017 season - which ended with Marc Marquez winning the title on Sunday - and wasted little time getting ready for next year's campaign.
But Rossi lasted just two laps of the track after coming off at Turn 10 at the Spanish circuit.
Rossi's bike was smashed apart in the crash.
And judging by the pictures below, it'll be an expensive write-off for the Yamaha team.
“I hope that they are able to fix and we can use the engine tomorrow”
Valentino Rossi after his crash in testing at Valencia
Speaking yesterday, Rossi said he's keen to get the 2018 engine fixed ahead of today's testing in Valencia.
"The first priority was the engine, that is the first prototype of the 2018 engine," he said.
"I hope that they are able to fix and we can use the engine tomorrow, so I can understand."
Rossi was riding on a 2017 Yamaha chassis with a new prototype engine.
And when asked if the new 2018 engine caused the crash, Rossi said: "No, no, no, Turn 10, maybe cold tyres.
"I was already two and a half laps so I push, lose the front, I don't know if I was a little bit out of the line or [the tyre] was cold, I don't know."
