MotoGP star Valentino Rossi unlikely to discuss Yamaha future until mid-2018

The veteran rider is under contract with Yamaha until the end of next season, after having his deal extended before the first race of the 2016 calendar.

But Yamaha boss Lin Jarvis admits any negotiations over an extension are not likely to take place any time soon.

Jarvis claims Rossi will know what he wants to do by the sixth race of 2018 in Italy.

And when asked by Autosport whether talks over a new deal for 2019 had started, Jarvis replied: "No, because we have a two-year contract.

"Last year we did it [renewed his contract] in Qatar, which was at the beginning of the season before, as such.

“I don't think it would be as early as Qatar [next year]”

Lin Jarvis on Valentino Rossi's contract talks

"Right now we're a little more than half a year into a two-year contract.

"I don't think it would be as early as Qatar [next year]."

Rossi recently suffered a double leg-break but still managed to race just 21 days after being admitted to hospital.

He managed to finish fifth in the Aragon Grand Prix, using a secret hidden brake to help him avoid further injury.

However, at the grand old age of 38, it is unclear whether the Italian will still want race on upon the end of his current deal.

Rossi has previously suggested that this may prove to be his last contract.

The icon will be continuing to ride through the pain at this weekend's Motul Grand Prix of Japan.
