Alpinestars releases airbag data from Dovizioso-Quartararo Silverstone crash - Fox Sports

Racing leather supplier Alpinestars has released data from the shocking Andrea Dovizioso-Fabio Quartararo Silverstone crash, revealing the effectiveness of racing suit airbags.

The Lap 1, Turn 1 incident sent both riders to hospital, with Dovizioso launched into the air after he was unable to avoid Quartararo’s crashing bike.

Both riders were later cleared of serious injury, and both will compete at next weekend’s San Marino Grand Prix.

Such were the forces of the impact for Dovizioso that the factory Ducati rider briefly lost consciousness after he hit the deck.

Airbags fitted to riders’ leathers were made compulsory across all categories at the beginning of the 2018 season.

While they won’t prevent every injury, the airbag system more than likely prevented further drama for Dovizioso and Quartararo.

Quartararo was the first to go down — after he was checked up by eventual race winner Alex Rins — and, according to Alpinestars, the Frenchman’s Tech-Air system fully deployed 0.06s before his first impact with the ground.

Dovizioso — who also uses Alpinestars leathers — was thrown off his bike after his Ducati hit Quartararo’s Petronas Yamaha. While the Tech-Air system didn’t recognise the Ducati’s initial impact, it deployed once the Italian was about to make contact with the ground.

The sophisticated Tech-Air algorithm detects the initial phases of a crash, which ignites canisters and can inflate airbags in 0.045s — some 0.032s larger than the winning gap at Silverstone.

The key difference between a car airbag and the suit’s airbag is that the latter can almost ‘predict’ an impact, rather than being triggered by one.

The airbag padding offers full upper body protection for back, shoulders, kidney area, chest and upper abdomen.

British rider Cal Crutchlow had been testing versions of the system since 2014, and said last year that Alpinestars’ wide use in racing has given the company enough data to get the system into racing sooner.

“Alpinestars has so many guys on tracks around the world that this is why they have been able to develop it so fast. We get new and updated stuff all the time,” he said.

“I know it cannot go over the whole body but it used to be over the shoulder, top of the arm and down the ribs. Now we also have our hips and legs [protected].

“The way it works is superb and it has definitely saved me and other riders from broken bones.”
