MotoGP: Valentino Rossi gives important message to Yamaha team-mate Maverick Vinales

The 23-year-old has been unhappy with the new Yamaha M1. 

Vinales only finished top in two of the nine 2018 test days. 

He also ended the final test in Qatar fifth overall.  

But veteran Yamaha ace Rossi has told Vinales to be more realistic about his expectations. 

Rossi said: ”Yes, Maverick looks very down but at the end he is fourth or fifth.

"Because he wants to stay in first position with one second [over the rest], and still [he would be] not happy. 

"So, it's a different approach. 

“I think he is young and he wants to try to always stay in front.

"But the modern MotoGP changed very much, for me because the limit with the tyre is very, very close for everybody - so you have also to suffer."

Speaking on the final day of testing last month in Asia, Vinales didn’t pull any punches. 

"For me, by long the worst [test],” the rookie raged. 

“Even in Malaysia, it was the worst one that I've been in with Yamaha and this one was even worse.

"Today we struggle much more than yesterday; I think we had the solution, but finally not. We miss a little bit in all areas.

"Maybe it was new tyre and I was excited by incredible laps but finally this morning, when I get up on the bike, was completely the same problem as always."
