MotoGP will return to Austin COTA and sets 2018 date

MotoGP, the world’s premier motorcycle racing, will return to Circuit of the Americas in 2018 on the weekend of April 20-22, according to the organization’s provisional calendar released Wednesday.

This year’s Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas MotoGP event at the Austin track also was on the third weekend of April.

Just like this year, the COTA event will be the third on the MotoGP season calendar. The 2018 season will begin in Qatar on March 18 and then move to Argentina on April 8, as it did in 2017. The big event in Austin will be Sunday, April 22.

MotoGP is the second most important event for Circuit of the Americas, trailing only the United States Grand Prix Formula One race in attendance and interest.

Drivers voiced concerns about bumps in the track in April — several even insisting they wouldn’t feel safe unless there were repairs — but COTA chairman Bobby Epstein told the American-Statesman the bumps would be smoothed out.

There are 19 events on the 2018 MotoGP calendar, and Austin remains the only North American stop.

Silverstone, the traditional British track, is not listed on the provisional schedule, although there is an Aug. 26 stop simply labeled “Great Britain.” Dorna, the Spanish group that runs MotoGP, is in negotiations with both Silverstone and Donington, where the event was held from 1987-2009.
